Gay Place

By Kate X Messer, April 23, 2010, Columns

TUEZGAYZ Last week, we suggested a great way to start your supergay week. And we'll suggest it again. Check out the planning meetings for the local arm of Equality Across America, the post-Prop 8/Join the Impact/National Equality March-related activist hub with one single demand: Equal protection in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states. Get involved. The meetings run through mid-May. So that's your Monday (See Monday). How about the day before hump day? Can it possibly be too gay? The Glitoris (www.theglitoris.com) presents a new queer night, TuezGayz, featuring indie/homo/electro dance tunage at Barbarella. Ever since the week before last, when we waxed about the St. Francis Vikings, we've been wiggling nostalgic, noting that Barbarella is the site of the old Cavity Club, the very place a certain Power Snatch premiered in its pre-Terry & Darcie lineup in 1992 – whoa, ancient history. (Set list: The Chills' "I Love My Leather Jacket," Iggy's "Search & Destroy," Mr. Ted Nugent's "Great White Buffalo," and, if we remember correctly, a medley of la Madge's "Burning Up" con Pocket FishRmen's "Big Ass on Fire"?) Further dalliances into pointless nostalgia insists that we mention that Barbarella dude John Gardner is from Orlando, Fla. (and you know we have heritage in that big dangle of a state), and a certain club named Faith in Physics comes to mind. And that shit goes back to the almost Precambrian Eighties. Goth when goth meant goth. Truly some queerness, if not outright gayness, in the water. Much love to this new queer dance night.
