Two big dykes take over our town

BIG DYKE TWOFER It's a veritable smorgasbord of dykutainment this Thursday, Nov. 6. Two big dogs of the lezzie lexicon – Dykes to Watch Out For artist and creator Alison Bechdel and legendary crooner k.d. lang – are in town for the night. Called by Utne Reader "one of the greatest hits of the twentieth century," Dykes to Watch Out For has reflected the lives of lesbians so accurately since its 1983 inception that dykes across the nation have suspected their homes bugged. Coincidentally, in 1983, lang formed her first band, a Patsy Cline tribute called the Reclines. And just to stake her claim as a nonmainstream artist, lang re-enacted a seven-hour artificial heart transplant performance-art piece that same year. That's 50 years of dykonography between them. This year, they've each released new works: Bechdel with Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic and lang's latest CD, Watershed. And this week, Austin has them all to itself. See the Gay Place blog for more.
