AIDS Candlelight Memorial Service

to Be Sunday, May 19

On Sunday, May 19, Austin will observe its third year of participation in the 19th International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Service. The event will be from 8-9pm at Republic Square Park at Fifth and Colorado. The local service will host speakers, prayer, music, poems, songs, and candle lighting with loved ones and both new and old friends. Austin Mayor Gus Garcia will light the first candle for all attending and read a proclamation from the city of Austin.

The Global Health Council has selected as this year's theme, "Share Your Vision for a Brighter Tomorrow." People in more than 500 communities in 75 countries will participate in this, the world's largest and oldest annual grassroots HIV/AIDS event. The observance is held to honor the memory of those lost to HIV/AIDS, show support for those living with the disease, raise more awareness of the epidemic, and help mobilize community involvement in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

This year's participation has been overwhelming, with representation from HIV/AIDS organizations, as well as Austin's GLBT bars. Speakers are planned from the HIV Planning Council, ASA, Austin Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, Ambush Magazine, Austin Men's Project, Interfaith Care Alliance, Kingdom Seekers, LGRL, MCC at Freedom Oaks, Project Transitions, TGRA, United Court of Austin, and Wright House Wellness Center.
