We're gonna keep telling you that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 'til we get on your last nerve, okay?

What's funny is that the two big events for the important health cause aren't even in October. Nope. The 2000 Komen Concert for the Cure, featuring an all-star reunion of Marcia Ball, Angela Strehli, and Lou-Ann Barton, plus special guest Donna Hightower at the Ben Hur Shrine Temple, is actually happening on Friday, Nov. 3, 7:30pm, and the 2000 Komen 5K Race for the Cure, taking off from the GSD&M building at Sixth & Lamar is two days later, Sunday, Nov. 5, 8am. Purple & Pink Go Nice Together

October is almost as many months as June is. (June is ... Dairy Month ... Malaria Month ... National Safety Month ... Obesity Awareness Month ... and whatever you do, please don't tell Raoul Hernandez that June is Jazz Month ...) In addition to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. And while the Susan Komen, Breast Cancer Resource Center, and American Cancer Society people are encouraging Pink Ribbon wearing for breast cancer awareness, our local SafePlace asks that you protest the estimated 1.5 million incidents of domestic violence in Texas each year by wearing a Purple Ribbon. Now, of course, this isn't all that SafePlace is doing to boost awareness of this still-prevalent plague. The month is loaded with events and activities, including outreach to a variety of communities -- with the Austin Metropolitan Ministries Task Force on Family Violence for the Faith Community Campaign (385-5181), with Saheli for the Asian Outreach Project (345-9490), and with the YMCA for the Violence in Our Community Conference (326-1222). SafePlace will also present the Clothesline Project Exhibit, Monday-Friday, Oct. 16-20 at the Travis County Courthouse, 1000 Guadalupe and the Stokes Building, 314 W. 11th, presenting artful T-shirts covered with the testimonies of abuse survivors (356-1659). A Virtual Clothesline Exhibit will concurrently be up on the group's Web site. The big caper, however, goes down this Monday, Oct. 9 at the SafePlace Third Anniversary Party, commemorating the merger of the Center for Battered Women and the Austin Rape Crisis Center. The hoop-de-doo happens at the Austin Music Hall and features, get this: Wynonna Judd. Yup, that Wynonna Judd. Damn. Tickets are going fast. www.austin-safeplace.org or 356-1594.

SIMS Like the First Time

We know what you're thinking: "Darn! It's not a Foreigner Hoot Nite???" Nope, sorry (Note to selves: Foreigner Hoot Nite...). It's just a bunch of local musicians giving two hoots for those crusty rockasaurs who refuse to die. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the Rolling Stones Super Hoot at the Red Eyed Fly, 715 Red River, is this Saturday, Oct. 7, 7pm. And if that's not enough to Start you Up, baby, then check out the shaggy, blond goodness of the Brian Jones Hoot Nite, Sunday, Oct. 15, 7pm at the Continental Club, 1315 S. Congress. Both of these non-moss gatherings will, of course, benefit our wonderful SIMS Foundation, a local group dedicated to providing low-cost mental health assistance and substance abuse counseling ("'ello, Keef?") to Austin musicians (see ad p.121). 804-1008.

Totally unrelated, but a natural tie-in with the headline: the Fall Festival & Chili Cook-Off, Saturday, Oct. 7, 4pm at Kerbey Lane -- University, 2606 Guadalupe, will benefit Sims Elementary School's Family Resource Center. 477-5717.
