Todd Rundgren might as well have been talking to us, 'coz that's what our friends keep saying. Oh, you don't want to know, trust us. Enough about us; how 'bout you, girlfriend? How's Trix, and Trudy, and Tracey? My, how you do get around. Well, it is easier nowadays what with Gaby & Mo's and those regular GirlWorld nights at the Forum. Hmmm. You are in your element. Well, now, don't forget about our ol' pals over at Club Skirt. They were doin' it for themselves and for the rest of the sisters in Austin back when we had nothing with a capital N. This weekend's Skirt, Fri, Oct 22, 7pm-midnight at Fiesta Gardens, benefits Metropolitan Community Church and the HIV Wellness Center, which seems darned appropriate since it's AIDS Awareness Month and all. Flee Fly Flu Fight

Dripping, watering, itching, burning, sneezing, yuk! Who hasn't felt the wrath of the bad bastard of the cold world, influenza? That aching, snorting, sniffling, phlegmifying, fevering, woozying condition that lays you up forever, as the symptoms have a nasty habit of sticking around. Before we go off sounding like a NyQuil™ ad again, let us tell you about Flu Fight '99. It is happening now and will continue through this Sat, Oct 23. Today's times (Thu, Oct 21) are 9am-1pm and 4-7pm. Tomorrow and Saturday, the times are 9am-1pm, only. Many area malls (like Northcross) and health clinics (like Seton, Veterans', North west, etc.) will offer the shot. 324-1899.

Let's Kick Violence's Ass

Ostracism begets defensiveness begets stewing and brewing begets anger begets goin' Billy Jack, goin' postal, goin' day trader, capping some asses -- However you wish to classify or colloquialize, violence begets violence. Period. As a part of YWCA of USA's Week Without Violence, our local Y is hosting the Conference on Violence this Fri, Oct 22, 10:30am-4:30pm. The conference is pricey, $90 at the door, but will be packed with informative workshops, and will feature keynoters Martha & Juan Cotera, parents of young Juan Javier Cotera who was murdered in the summer of 1997. Lunch is included, and if you round up to an even Ben Franklin, your extra $10 gets you into the Networking Social, 5-8pm featuring appetizers and local salsa band Sazon. 326-1222.

Autumn Leaves

We get all giddy and girly with the change of seasons. Sure, Texas doesn't manifest the change between summer and winter with the brilliant foliage hues of say, New England, but then, those Yankees can't pronounce Manor, Koenig, or Manchaca, now, can they? Even though our pitiful li'l pecan leaves bypass the brilliant yellows, oranges, and reds of the mighty maple, going right to brown and right to the ground, we like to wrap up in our woolly Swiss Army sweater and crunch around in piles of scattered tree detritus like we're way up in those northern climes. The Assistance League of Austin, promoters of many a local philanthropic topic and publishers of the semi-annual Around Austin Community Event Calendar, hosts their Fall Fling this Sun, Oct 24, 6-9pm at the UT Alumni Hall, 2110 San Jacinto. Tickets are $35 per and include admission to live and silent auctions and full dinner. 458-3716.

Coming to Terms

How we come to grips with our roles or the roles of our culture in evil tragedies sets us apart from the beasts. In examining these insights and perspectives, perhaps we can learn to set ourselves even farther from the beasts before human cruelties and tragedies like the Holocaust ever occur again. This week, Austin comes together to remember the events of one of humankind's most horrific creations. The Arts, Spirituality & the Holocaust Symposium takes place at a number of venues and religious institutions across town, Sat-Tue, Oct 23-26, featuring art exhibits, workshops, lectures, films, a choir concert, chamber orchestra performance, and live theatre. Venues include the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, St. Edward's University, the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest, the UT RTF department, and the UT Harry Ransom Center, among others. The Austin Children's Choir will present a free Holocaust Remembrance Concert, Sun, Oct 24, 7:30pm at the UT Bates Recital Hall. Symposium, 472-2004; Choir, 452-7662.
