It Ain't Over 'Til the Sharpe Lady Sambas

The ashes are but a smudge on the forehead and the sins have been forgiven. Lent may be in full swing for some, but it seems that some local fundraising types can't shake the naughties out of their nalgas.A Night in Brazil -- A Carnaval Celebration hits La Zona Rosa Sat, Feb 27, 9pm, and it promises masks, confetti, serpentinas, all sorts of Brazilian yummies, plus great music from Susanna Sharpe & Samba Police and Sambaxé -- all of the requisite mood alterers to put you back in the Fat Tuesday state of mind. Portions of the night's proceeds will go to Fundação Esperança, a nonprofit assisting at-risk youth in Vila Brejal, a slum of Maceió, in Alagoas, Brazil. 263-4240.

Jest Not Lest Ye Be Jested

Fools' Fest 1999 is the third annual of its kind to benefit the newly relocated Out Youth. This year's folly tickles the funnybone Tue, Mar 30, at Esther's Follies. The lineup is nothing short of giggle-worthy and titter-inducing: Joe York, magician Ray Anderson, and Zachary Scott director Dave Steakley, to name but a few. We tell you of this so early because Out Youth seeks sponsors, and sponsors get prime tickets and then some. 419-1233.

In This House That We Call Home

Ahhhh! A place to call your own. Let's not even talk about the Austin housing market. Sure, the people who call a home "real estate" love to yammer on about our "smart growth" and "urban infill," but to folks who have been left behind in the dust of Austin's re-boom, a house is just a home -- something for which one so diligently works and maybe never achieves -- a nod in the American Dream. NAACP presents yet another of their free HomeBuyer Workshops this Sat, Feb 27, 9am-1pm at 2209 Rosewood, #212. Go to find out helpful things like overcoming credit difficulties, saving for a down payment, and getting approved for a mortgage. 477-5541.

Early Birds

Don't forget, WormFest '99, the big squirmy part of South Austin Community Gardens' Birthday Bash, is this Sat, Feb 27, 1-4pm at 1001 Cumberland. Come, if not for the wiggly creatures then for the plant sale, compost demo, raffles, giveaways, refreshments, and music by the South Austin Community Gospel Choir. 443-1117.

Declare This!

Artists' Legal & Accounting Assistance (ALAA) know all about the confusion brought on by tax season. They present Tax Filing for Artists, a free seminar, this Sat, Feb 27, 10am-1pm at Public Domain, 807 Congress, to address questions about filing with the IRS. 407-8980.

Ban This!

Human dignity activists, gay parents, straight parents, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, the children of today, tomorrow, and beyond -- who isn't affected by the Texas Legislature's proposed preposterous ban on adoptions or foster care of children into houses deemed "gay" by the state of Texas? Fight the Adoption Ban! is a panel forum hosted by the International Socialists this Mon, Mar 1, 6:30pm at University Baptist, 405 W. 22nd. The panel will be comprised of parents with adopted children and local activists. Call to schedule free child care. 452-5681./

Passage to Lisbon

Scene from CasablancaDon't Bogart your fantasy of long lost love returned; hang on to that pathetic delusion for just one more night! This weekend, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) strikes the chords of love lost with their 1999 CASAblanca Gala this Sat, Feb 27, 7pm at the Four Seasons. Our local volunteer agency CASA carries a torch (much like Rick did for Ilsa) for kids caught in the middle of court cases by representing their interests. The black-tie event will feature a live casino, live and silent auctions, cuisine by Executive Chef Elmar Prambs, and ACC's Big Swing Band. Play it again, Sam. 459-2272.
