Okay, you nailed us. Lame headline. Cut us some slack, man. You try coming up with brilliant one-liners week after freakin' week. It's the end of the bleeding year (and one of our bloooodiest in memory, thank you very much: Well wishes, sympathy cards, love offerings in the form of nubile young virgins or cold hard cash will be accepted in care of this paper ...).

Where were we? Oh. Right. Flicks. Yes, two events this week feature screenings. There. There's the connection. Now get off our backs (and let us get back on ours).

• Bike Nite is a monthly event, they tell us. The Fund for Bicycle Safety is the beneficiary, so they say, for this Sun, Dec 13, 7pm event at Ruta Maya. Admission ($3) includes pizza, live music by Herman das German and more, plus a showing of Return of the Sorcerers. What is this fund, you ask? Well, we hear tell that it is an effort to help injured cyclists with legal and medical expenses. Future plans are to establish a Bicycle Safety Co-op. 302-9095.
• If you haven't yet seen Hands on a Hard Body, do consider checking it out at this special screening at the Paramount: the Texas Freedom Network hosts its Movie Screening & Silent Auction, Tues, Dec 15, 5:30pm. The network is our statewide watchdawg that monitors the radical right. The event kicks off at Miguel's La Bodega, 413 Colorado, for the silent auctioning. Then the whole shebang takes to the streets and heads over to the lovely Paramount Theater, where HoaHB will screen at 8pm. Tix are $40 per pop, which includes a 1999 membership to the network. 322-0545.

Egge in Your Face

(Ana, darling, please forgive us. The headline gods are not smiling down upon us this week; send help.) Austin's golden-cheeked warbler Ana Egge seems to be popping up all over town this week. And for a kid who has logged more road miles this year across the USA than AAA, this is saying something. If you missed her recent Gospel-a-Go-Go or whatever it was at the Cactus, fret not; there are upcoming chances to catch our li'l troubadour. For example, you could check out the Live Oak Coffeehouse this Fri, Dec 11, 7:30pm. The coffeehouse is a series of concerts, each benefitting a different cause; this week's = the Mary Lee Foundation. The series HQ is right near Lakeline Mall, 12310 RR620, N. , #104. It boasts a smoke- and alcohol-free, family- and listener-oriented vibe. 873-7249, ext. 2.

Put "Mom" on Your Ass

Geeeez, are we outdoing ourselves this week? We swear next year (Ooh! A resolution!) that all of our headlines will be palindromes or anagrams or at least germane or something.

We're giving you a week's notice for this event, because we think it will take some thought, some care, or at the very least a large amount of drinking. Each year, Tattoos From the Soul, a cadre of local needle nuts, give an amazing 100% of one weekend's earnings to the Child Advocacy Center. What this means for you tat virgins is that you finally have a socially responsible excuse to get your body inked permanently. For you already marked in the art of the flesh, consider adding or ... ahem, fixing some of those Saturday Night specials you received in a drunken haze featuring the name of your dorky frat or worse yet, rock band. Next weekend, Sat, Dec 19, 11am- Sun, Dec 20, 2am, those swarthy Sixth Street soulsters (514 E. Sixth) will poke some holes in you for a good cause, but only if you let 'em. 476-4003 or 472-1164.

Don't Worry, Baby, PAPA's Here

C'mon. That one's not half as bad as the others. Okay, all lame headlines and kidding aside. We're talking about political asylum -- the Political Asylum Project of Austin (PAPA). We Yankees are so swollen by easy living that it's easy to forget the whole idea behind this country in the first place. Okay, maybe the founding pops really just wanted the tax monkey off their backs, but the bill of goods they sold the rest of the world was that America was the land of the free, not just the free, rich, white landowners. You know, "Send us your poor ..." and all that. Locally, our noble PAPA runs with that sentiment and dedicates itself to providing pro bono legal representation to refugees, INS detainees, and all sorts of immigrants (you know, the kind of folks your ancestors once were). Anyway, this weekend PAPA is hosting a Holiday Party & Silent Auction, Fri, Dec 11, 5:30-8:30pm at 808 West Avenue. They suggest a $5 donation, which may be applied to auction purchase. Lourdes Pérez will sing, and you will munch on some fabulous hors d'oeuvres as you peruse the gift certificates and art work up for bid. 478-0546.
