Some Fine, Fine Voices

Voices for Children features three of Austin's most golden: Don Walser, Floyd Domino, and Ana Egge, as a matter of fact, singing their not-so-little hearts out to benefit the Pebble Project, the abuse prevention and intervention arm of Austin's Communities in Schools. The kid-friendly, alcohol-free event happens Sat, Aug 22, 6-10pm at the East First Garden Theatre, 4822-B E. Cesar Chavez. 462-1771.

Still Waiting

The Lab (Child & Family Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin) called to thank us for last week's plug and to add that they are still Accepting Applications. The program run by UT faculty and students in the university's child development program is well-known for its developmentally appropriate curriculum. The last few remaining slots will be filling fast. 471-3974.

Hump for the Arts

Artists' Legal & Accounting Assistance (AALA) hosts regular standing Hump Day Happy Hours, the first Wednesday of each month at Sholz Garten. This next one, Wed, Sep 1, 5:30pm, clients, volunteers, and new pals can hoist a few cold ones and do the networking thang.

* This week, AALA invites folks from all nonprofits (not just ones which benefit musicians and artists) to come network with them and the Nonprofit Center at a two-hour seminar, Board Responsibilities & Liabilities, Sat, Aug 22, 10am-noon at Hyde Park Theatre, 511 W. 43rd. Admission is free for company members and $5 for board members. 407-8980.

We Hear You Get Around

Assistance League of Austin has released its new 17-month 1998-99 Around Austin community events calendar. Local H-E-Bs and Randalls sell them at their customer service desks, and the Assistance League has them for sale at their thrift store on Burnet Road. They go for $7 and are cram-packed with event dates for all kinds of happenings all over town. We find it simply indispensable. 458-3716.

Too Soon to Boo?

Think it's too early to think about Halloween? Local retailers don't, and Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve is getting a jump on the horrid holiday, too. They seek actors, set designers, construction-types, lighting and FX wizzes, magicians and anybody who can "Boo" their way out of a bag to Volunteer for their annual Haunted Trails attraction. To Make Able

Austin will be the site of the Southwest's only expo for products and services geared toward the needs of disabled folk. The Southwest Technology Expo will feature modified vehicles, therapeutic tools, home and computer modifications, and more at McBeth Rec Center, 2401 Columbus, this weekend, Sat, Aug 21, 10am-6pm and Sun, Aug 22, 10am-3pm. expo@taicenter.com or 280-7235.
