Check Out These Digs

One of our fave fundraisers is back in town, this year at Barton Creek Square and Lakeline Malls. Each year, area homebuilders and architects manifest visions of kiddie wonderland and create playful playhouses for the purpose of raffling them off so that normal schmoes like you or we might enjoy watching our little ones' eyes light up when we unveil these playscape masterpieces. Casas for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is back. Playhouses reflecting this year's theme, Steppin' Out on Broadway (including edificial odes to Greater Tuna, Grease!, The Lion King, Peter Pan, and more) are on display at the malls beginning tonight, Thu, Jul 30 through Sat, Aug 8. Tickets are $3 each or 10 for $25. casatc@aol.com or 459-2272.

Reel Babes

We don't profess to know for 1/24th of a second who the heck Women in Film-Austin is, but, hey, we love a Garage Sale as much as the next gal so why shouldn't we tell you about it? The group is holding the sale this Sat, Aug 1, 8am-3pm at 1422 Broadmoor. The purpose is to raise funds for the group whose stated mission is to "promote the careers and enhance the recognition of all professional women in the film and video industries." 243-1630.

What a Bunch of Hams

Amateur Radio Operators from all over the great state of Texas will meet for Summerfest, Fri-Sat, Jul 31-Aug 1 at the Red Lion Hotel at I-35 & 290. This Austin Hamfest will offer a flea market of hardware and seminars covering a wide variety of topics like worldwide communication, low power operations, satellite communications, computer networking, Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS), and weather and emergency communications. Ham-sters are often the front line of communications during civil emergencies. Local meteorologists and NOAA weather radio reps will be on hand for presentations. Of course, our own Austin Amateur Radio Club will be there, making (radio) waves. The club holds monthly meetings at the Luby's off North Loop every second Tuesday of the month. jomak@ibm.net or W5SH or 345-0800.

Safely Under Cover

You might wanna find a nice hidey-hole to hide in once Austin's drag troupe Undercover tears the lid off the sucker. Patsy Clean, Hell & Ready, Bod Stewart, Pelvis, Lovergirl, U-Haul Trailer Trio, and more will strut their stuff at Tropical Heat Cafe, 900 E. Braker, this weekend, Sat, Aug 1, 8pm to benefit Lezbolympix and Women With AIDS. 452-9209.

PACin' With Garry

Come on down for the schmoooz-a-thon, but stay for the great music! TARAL-PAC is hosting a Happy Hour with pro-choice Gub candidate Garry Mauro, Mon, Aug 3, 5:30-7:30pm at La Zona Rosa. But more importantly, Billy Harvey and Ana Egge will be playing, and that alone is worth the price of admission ($10, but no one will be turned away for paying less). The event is casual, so don't worry about having to suit up. Just come as you schlubby are. 462-1661.

Double Shot of Your Love

Oh shoot! It's Immunization Time again. AISD requires Shots for Tots. This year, shots are available at South Austin Rec Center, Northcross Mall, Northeast Austin Health Center, and Far South Health Clinic. Call for times, dates, and locations. 469-2069.
