How YOU Can Volunteer For Change!
Every volunteer at AIDS Services of Austin makes a dramatic difference in the lives of people with AIDS by giving the gift of self -- the willingness to grow, to be present, to learn, and to serve. People come to us from every race, creed, culture, age, marital status, and orientation.
These are some of the ways you can help as a volunteer:
Helpers: This is one of our greatest volunteer needs. As disease progresses or after a hospital stay, many clients need assistance at home. Helper volunteers can help with light housework, laundry, meal preparation, errands, or shopping. Helpers enable clients to remain in the comfort of their own homes.
Freelance: A primary need is people with daytime availability, even just one day, one morning, or one afternoon per week. Daytime volunteers primarily assist clients with rides to medical and social services appointments. So, if you drive, have a vehicle, and have daytime hours available, please let us know!!
Buddies: Buddies provide one-on-one companionship and emotional support to our clients. Trips to the park or the mall, listening, and sometimes just hanging out are the hallmarks of being a Buddy.
To get started, we provide new volunteers with a general orientation to HIV/AIDS and to ASA. The next dates are: Tuesday evening, September 9th, from 6:00-8:30; and Saturday, October 4th, 11:00am-1:30pm. Further training is held for those volunteering as Helpers and Buddies.
