You'd think with a subject this sexy, we'd invest a little more energy and
come up with a snappier headline. Well, we wanted to get your attention and
geeez, how can one compete with Bob Newhart for funny? We are beside ourselves
knowing that the Uhlan of Understatement himself will be here for a
Benefit for
Any Baby Can, Thu, Mar 20 at the Austin Music Hall,
and quite frankly, find ourselves a little tongue-tied. We'll try to be more
articulate next week. In the meanwhile, call for tix.

Whatever Suits Ya
Goodwill is collecting suits through the month of March and instead of
merely asking for the shirt off your back, are offering quite a deal in
exchange for your donation. Bring an unwanted suit to the Jos. A. Bank store at
the Arboretum and receive $75 off your first and $100 off any additional suit,
sportscoat, or pair of trousers. Don't look at it as only an
Annual Suit
Trade-In, look at it as one of your last chances to get rid of that Sonny
Bono number you picked up in '72.

Wild Buds
Spring Break! Ahhhhh. The pitter-patter of little feet, the leaving open
and the slamming of the front door, the standing in front of the fridge for
hours, while screaming "I'm Bored!!!" at the tops of their little lungs... Well
there's that scenario, or there's ours: Take your little wild blossoms out for
a fresh-air fest at the
National Wildflower Research Center's Kids' Day,
Sat, Mar 15, 9am-5:30pm. There will be all sorts of activities at the center's
drop-in club, the Children's Little House, plus booksignings with children's
authors. Kids get in free with paying adults.

Bankroll the Bank
It takes cash to make cash; everybody knows that.
The Capital Area Food
Bank is soooooo close to meeting a fundraising
Challenge, but still
needs your help. Last year, the Mabee Foundation threw the gauntlet,
challenging our local food bank to raise $2.6 million in donations for
construction of its new
Distribution Center, and offer a
Matching
Grant of $400,000 if CAFB reaches its goal. It's time to make with the
whip-out. Get those pens and check books ready and call.

O'Golly!
Aye! It happens everytime this time every year. SXSW is raging on so fast
and furious, that we almost forget to prepare for
St. Patrick's Day.
Well here's an advanced notice: Sun, Mar 16, 1:30pm, the Backyard will host a
lovely tribute to the patron Saint of green beer and evacuating snakes (though
it's said that Saint Pat actually used Irish whiskey, and bein' a Catholic and
all, Pat prolly preferred Jameson to Bushmills... Then again, were either of
those clans distilling the holy spirit in those days? Hmmmmmm...) featuring
Lost Tribe, the Capitol City Highlanders Bagpipers, and Two O'Clock Courage for
a day's frolic and celebration benefiting
Youth Options' emergency
shelter and counseling services. Additionally, there will be refreshments,
activities and game. We'll hold out for the Irish.

Walk It Like You Talk It
Gripe all you want about how pedestrian-unfriendly Austin is. But if you don't
participate now, you'll miss the chance to have input in determining how
accessible our town is for foot traffickers. Meet up with the folks from
WALK Austin, Sat, Mar 22, 12 noon at the Whole Earth Provision Co., for
a three-hour walk along the 2.5 mile route from the corner of 12th & Lamar
to Barton Springs Road, and back again. The info gathered will be shared with
Dan Burden, founder of
Walkable Communities, Inc., an organization
gathering information about access, amenities, safety, and other aspects of
livable, walkable communities. Burden has over 20 years of experience in
bicycle and pedestrian safety, encouragement, and related planning. He also has
overseen over 30 local and state pedestrian/bicycle plans.
