AIDS has not taken us step-by-step. It is taking us life by precious life.
Numbed by an almost generation's worth of impuissant governmental dodgeball,
we've become a species resigned to fate's shitty blow. Oh, it's bigger than
all of us, we say as we shrug our shoulders, swallow our fear, and turn
away. Our culture reels in the face of this devastation. It can seem as though
no one's keeping track, no one's daring to remember, no one has the energy to
care. Some folks do fight back. Some assume a St. Terese-like diligence to the
little tasks which soften this pox on our collective conscience. These modern
saints are, of course, your humble AIDS services workers. They've taken a most
Zen approach to solving the insurmountable... Step-by-step. Appreciate it? Then
get out there and show it -- with your heart and with your wallet. Or better
yet, join us.
Stop in at the LCRA (3701 Lake Austin), any Bank One, or Norwest Bank, and
toss in a new pair of kids athletic-style socks to accompany the shoes which
will be distributed to kids in need at Salvation Army's annual
Shoe-In. Volunteers from last year's shoe drive noticed that many of the
kids had no socks to go along with their new shoes, so they took it upon
themselves to rectify. The Austin Business Volunteer Council will
accept donations for Socks From Our Souls, through Wed, Oct 30.

this item is just so tweet. The 1996 Green Birdhouse Design Competition
is accepting entries of green, sustainably designed birdhouses. Green, in this
case, means using bio-degradable, regenerative building materials, and
principles of non-toxicity and sparing limited natural resources. Competition
ends next week, Thu, Oct 31 and will be judged and awarded at the Green
Building Conference Thu-Sat, Nov 7-9, at the Austin Convention Center. Call

in your brush, and collecting in little dust balls all over the floor. There's
no avoiding it: Where there's men, there's hair. And there will be Hair o'
Plenty flowing in the Hairy Man Contest at the Hairy Man
Festival, Sat, Oct 26, 1-7pm at Cat Hollow Park, off RR620, between I-35
& Hwy183. The wacky gathering celebrates the follicles of the Y-chromosome
set while taking canned food donations for the Williamson County Area Food
Banks. The contest will begin at 6pm "with a cut, stuff, and buff package
to the winner." Funny, the Chron could have its own contest in this
office alone! Right, boss? Uhh, boss...? 459-3442.
The daring young Stearman Squadron in their flying machines will be
performing stunts and feats of aerial wonder in barnstorming biplanes Sat, Oct
26, 10am-5pm at the Executive Airport, 811 W. Howard. There will be plenty of
Red Baron Pizza in this event to highlight a fundraiser for Special
Olympics: For every Red Baron Pizza sold in October, Red Baron will donate
5cents to the special olympiads, who, by the way, will be competing in the Area
13 Bowling Tournament at Showplace Lanes, Sat, Oct 26 at 8am. 835-9873.
Our local branch Sierra Club would like to invite you to join them and
Pedalin' for the Planet the club's annual bike ride, Sat , Nov 2, in the
Hill Country. Entry forms are available at area bike shops and the fee is $20
before Sat, Oct 26 or $25 after. Routes ranging from 20 to 100 miles are
available. Launching point is Leander High, near Hwy183 & FM1431.

The National Council of Jewish Women and Communities in Schools
are holding a groovy concert this weekend and want to encourage parents to
become hippies. No, wait... that's not what it says... They would like parents
of tots to become involved with the Home Instruction Program for Preschool
Youngsters (HIPPY). HIPPY gives parents the confidence and knowledge to be
their children's first educators and attempts to level the playing field for
kids entering into kindergarten. This weekend's Kidz Concert at Liberty
Lunch, Sun, Oct 27, 2:30-5:30pm, features the Chron's 1996 "Best of
Austin Reader's Poll" best children's entertainer Joe McDermott (Yes, Joe, just
like the best tortilla chip!), Los Pinkys, John Emery, the Ben Hur Shrine Drum
& Bugle Corps (will they be arriving on chariot?), and Santa-stic
storyteller Carl Anderson. 345-9629.
Last spring, Foundation for a Compassionate Society held the forum
Feminist Family Values, featuring Angela Davis and Gloria Steinem. Folks
are still talking about the event, which reported on the state of modern
feminism. The foundation brings four more speakers linked by the theme
Feminism & Fundamentalism, Sat, Oct 26, 7pm. The forum features
Mahnaz Afkhami, Minister of State for Women's Affairs in Iran until the
position was eliminated by the Islamic Revolution; Yvonne Deutsch, graduate of
Hebrew University and human rights supporter for Palestinians in Israel; Marta
Benavides, Baptist minister working to sustain the rural population in El
Salvador; and Robin Morgan, founder and author of Sisterhood is
Powerful. The main event is preceded by a forum of Texas activists,
including Cecile Richards of the Texas Freedom Network and Graciela Sanchez of
the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center in San Antonio. The evening event is $5.
Free childcare is available to those who call ahead to register.
