We're running this week's cover story by Suzy Banks not because it represents late-breaking news, a hot political issue, or an important cultural event, but because it is good writing, good storytelling, and great reading. Banks regularly dispenses building and home improvement wisdom in her weekly Chronicle column "Hearth and Soul," back in our classifieds section (see p. 78). Last weekend (and doing much of the work themselves), she and her husband/construction partner Richard led a Chronicle team constructing an awning for the back of the building, creating a wonderful shaded area for the staff. Banks' story didn't get the cover in exchange for labor; we had already made that decision - it is just a happy coincidence. Currently, the two are in Eagle Pass to appear in John Sayles' Lone Star.

Speaking of writing, The Austin Chronicle Short Story Contest deadline is fast approaching. May 1 is the last date to submit stories for this year's contest, co-sponsored by 107.1 KGSR, Book People, and Balcones Fault Red Granite beer. This is your chance to write and to be read. Take it.

Many letters to cross, so I'm out of here.
