District Cultural Arts Fest
Presented by Six Square, this festival is a celebration honoring the rich legacy and cultural contributions of Central Texas’ Black community. From African drumming and dancing to theatrical performances, the day's variety of events will reanimate five distinct sites, providing new context to each location’s history – accompanied by a mouthwatering array of food and adult beverages.Sat., Sept. 1, 2-10pm. $15-65. -

Volcom X Levitation: Poster Retrospective
Now this here's a screenprint poster retrospective that spans the 10-year legacy of the Levitation music festival, with a stunning array of graphic goodness galvanizing the Volcom walls, and – even better – original works by Mishka Westell and Jaime Zuverza to dazzle your eyes with. Here we go again, right? Recommending something beyond the city limits? We know, we know: There's already too much to cover properly and we should stick to Austin. But, damnit, this work by Anita Cooke, tell you what, it's so worth the drive to see it. Layers upon layers, textures upon textures, patterns and colors like these big and striking fabric-based pieces just grew, like some especially baroque form of coral. But you know the woman's spent hours and hours and hours, days on end, on each one. So, maybe make a day of it? Recspec Gallery: The Indigo Show
This excellent emporium of art, design, and style within the Flatbed Press complex, still going strong while anticipating the eventual move to new digs, presents a new exhibition – curated by jewelry savant Holly Bobisuthi – of work by an array of artists from Austin and around the country. Listen: "Indigo is a spectrum, a transformation, a transition, a contradiction, a green plant that makes blues. The color of both day and night. The pale blue of high noon sky over Texas and the almost-black blue of the deep Pacific Ocean."
