MASS: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers

Leonard Bernstein's magnum opus is presented here in its fully staged version with the Austin Symphony's Peter Bay at the helm. What that means is one glorious juggernaut of a live show, including performances by Jubilant Sykes as the Celebrant, the ASO, Conspirare, Austin Opera, Ballet Austin, UT's Marching Band, the Austin Children’s Choir, the African Children’s Choir, Panoramic Voices, guitarist Mitch Watkins, and surprise guests. This MASS is, yes, massive – and recommended to high heaven. Hey – you can see our reporter Brenner's interview with maestro Bay right here.
    June 29-30. Fri.-Sat., 8pm. $29 and up.

    Booth's Richard III

That's John Wilkes Booth, yes. Because Beth Burns and her acclaimed Hidden Room company, abetted by the research of the Harry Ransom Center's Eric Colleary, are presenting Shakespeare's kingly drama according to the notes in that actor/director/assassin's own promptbook(!) And, per usual, the troupe – some of the best actors in town – will be embodying the narrative in the style of performance considered de rigueur in the original production's era. And Shanon Weaver reviews it for us right here.
    Through June 30. Fri.-Sat., 8pm; Sun., 5pm. $15-30.
