Fire Relief: The Concert for Central Texas

Mon., Oct. 17, 2011, 7pm

Frank Erwin Center

1701 Red River, 512/471-7744

Wildfires in Bastrop last month scorched nearly 55 square miles – some 38,000 acres – destroying 576 homes and claiming two lives. The damage will take years, if not decades, to fully recover from, with the beloved Lost Pines area around Bastrop State Park quite possibly lost forever. Much like the Neighbors in Need benefit for victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Fire Relief: The Concert for Central Texas brings together some of the finest voices in American music to assist in the relief efforts, led once more by patron saint Willie Nelson. Headliner and constant country chart-topper George Strait is capable of selling out the Frank Erwin Center at any given time on his own accord, so consider the rest of this blockbuster bill a bonus. Lyle Lovett and Asleep at the Wheel get marquee placement, but the heart of the bill no doubt goes to the Dixie Chicks, who haven’t appeared locally since the Accidents and Accusations tour in 2006. Sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Robison double as the Court Yard Hounds, leading an impressive special guest roster that includes the guitar triad of Eric Johnson, Steve Miller, and Joe Satriani, plus Christopher Cross and Shawn Colvin, among others. Friday Night Lights coach Kyle Chandler, and actor/Nobelity Project founder Turk Pipkin serve as the evening’s emcees. – Austin Powell
