Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, marks my hire date at this publication in 1993, a two-decade love affair with Sixties idealists, beloved newsprint, and Austin music. My first night was spent at the Austin Motel, first meal eaten at the Hole in the Wall, and first show taken in at Antone’s on Guadalupe. Hearts, all. For this personally momentous lover’s rock holiday, I’ve played matchmaker. Prom King & Queen: Bob Schneider & the Moonlight Orchestra (ACL Live at the Moody Theater) and Suzanne Vega (Paramount Theatre) Country Loving: Jesse Dayton (Broken Spoke) and Tift Merritt (Parish) Garage Boys & It Girls: the Best (Beerland) and Feathers (Patagonia) La Raza: Una Noche Romantica, with Los Tres Reyes and Manuel “Cowboy” Donley (Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center) and Nakia (Sahara Lounge) Old Weird Austin: Big Guitars From Texas benefit for Evan Johns (Antone’s) and White Ghost Shivers (Continental Club) – Raoul Hernandez
