Four-and-a-half decades separate Ralph “Soul” Jackson’s first single from his proper full-length debut in 2012, but the Alabama Love Man is making up for lost time. Growing up in the same Phenix City, Ala., home as cousin Jo Jo Benson, Jackson cut the scorching “Don’t Tear Yourself Down” with the legendary Muscle Shoals rhythm section while still in high school. A killer funk version of Cream’s oft-covered “Sunshine of Your Love” on Atlantic wasn’t enough to turn him into a star, but Jackson is the genuine article. – Thomas Fawcett
