Deerhoof, Thor & Friends, Christina Schneider's Genius Grant

As noted in the new album’s accompanying manifesto, “Fragmentation is more than an aesthetic” for Deerhoof. Joyous clamoring ensues on the San Francisco group’s pleasantly divergent Mountain Moves. The collection weaves covers and guest stars into a cohesive next step for the revered Nineties-rooted indie act. The quartet’s distinctly surrealist, instrumental style maintains. Fitting local companions Thor & Friends open with marimba-centered chamber meditations led by Swans and Shearwater percussionist Thor Harris. Sweetly strange melodies from Christina Schneider’s Genius Grant greenlight the avant-garde evening. – Rachel Rascoe
