The sonic boom touching off last Saturday’s thunderstorm brought down the fire hazard just enough for Peter Bay and the Austin Symphony Orchestra (8:30pm) to prep fireworks (9:30) on Auditorium Shores Thursday. Independence Day options before, during, and after remain plentiful, so here are a half-dozen suggestions: Scoot Inn’s Pig Roast beginning at 2pm (Slomo Drags, Loving Ugly, the Couch, Holiday Mountain); Nutty Brown Cafe & Amphitheatre’s Bob Schneider extravaganza (with Water and Rust, and the Wind and the Wave), complete with fireworks, 5pm; Hole in the Wall’s nine-band blowout, starting at 7pm (Big Britches, Robobilly, Wild Bill & the Lost Knobs, Stumbledrunk, Bluebird Specials, Under the Sun, Ted Nesseth, MK Ultra, Red Dirt Rebellion); Hotel Vegas’ Rockaway Beach Party, 9pm, as covered (ELO, Stooges, Bowie) by local all-stars (Roky Moon & Out of the Blue, Los Twat Vibes, Holy Wave, respectively); personal favorite and Austin’s John Lee Hooker-like Hosea Hargrove at the Continental Club, followed by ingenious Grupo Fantasma spin-off Money Chicha (10pm and 12mid, respectively); and late-night surf, punk, and post-punk at Beerland (Eets Feats, Crooked Bangs, Ghetto Ghouls). Lightning strike. – Raoul Hernandez
