A. Sinclair, The Sour Notes, El Lago, Duncan Fellows

The Sour Notes’ prolific output speaks to a bubblegum factory proficiency. Fifth LP Darkest Sour opens with “Clock Strikes 12,” the local garage-pop troupe’s “Song 2,” a taut, hooky, riff comet part Blur and all thrill. Muscled jangle (“Stay Close”) and dream-pop (“Small Hints”) coalesce 21st century Nuggets best labeled noir pop (“Loose Leaf & Bleak”), although closer “Ride It Out” is ripe for commercial soul-pop coverage. – Raoul Hernandez
