Austin avant-folk crew the Deer spun cosmically calm, bucolic musings on 2016’s Tempest & Rapture, drawing eloquently on frontwoman Grace Rowland Park’s dream-pop vox. Roger Sellers, now building a major audience as the singer and interstellar composer Bayonne, played banjo in an early iteration of the Deer.
We all have our holiday traditions. Even Gerard Cosloy’s vinyl imprint repping underground Austin can’t resist hanging the stockings by the chimney with care. Explosive post-punks Borzoi put the star atop the tree, while John Schooley’s one-man electronicabilly punkno outfit Rocket 808 hangs the tinsel. Noise punk contingent Ilinx, featuring members of Sherman’s March, SXSW, Exhalants, and Super Thief, spices the cider along with the hilariously named Sick Van vs. Spider Sabich.
Austin’s LNS Crew jabbed the trill-trap punching bag well before everyone on SoundCloud joined with peeps, pumps, memes, and face tats. LNS special sauce Cory Kendrix returns from Denver to release Ignorance 2, following 2014’s syrup-drenched G-funk debut. The LNS reunion supplies stellar homegrown talent: Y2, Jaron Randolph, Sertified, and Dowrong.
