Sound on Sound presents the Shins, Baio

Sixteen years after the jangling “New Slang” became inescapable and Oh, Inverted World catapulted the Shins to indie juggernaut status, founder James Mercer maintains a genius pop sensibility and choirboy as permanent, recognizable anchors. His fifth release under the moniker from earlier this year, Heartworms, evokes that same quiet effervescence of the Shins’ prior work. It’s a buoyant pop sound, thriving on a clean, sleepy summer warmth.

Sound on Sound presents Snow tha Product, Castro Escobar, AJ Hernz

This triple threat Latina bill headlines Snow tha Product, whose Claudia Meza bodybags competition on “Bad Bitches,” bounces clubs in the pop-leaned “Nuestra Cancion Pt. 2,” and boasts sing-song cadences in “Waste of Time” from spitfire mixtape The Rest Comes Later. Meanwhile, Castro Escobar drops introspective bars in debut Fidel’s Lunch like “crossing the river in ’95, a few days after Selena died” and San Antonio native AJ Hernz offers woozy pop-R&B atmospherics.

Sound on Sound presents Boris, Endon, USA/Mexico

As many years active as studio releases, Boris’ 25th anniversary U.S. tour doubles as promotion for July’s Sargent House bow, Dear. A mix of stoner rock and trad doom, it departs from fuzz rock fan favorites Heavy Rocks and Pink, but still finds the Japanese trio toying with drone and heavy metal. Recent collaborator Endon brings the black metal, and Butthole Surfers noise-punk offshoot USA/Mexico rounds out a perfectly weird lineup.

Sound on Sound presents Hot Chip (DJ set), Tim Sweeney, Lovefingers, Flying Turns

Get “Ready for the Floor.” From goofy, mellow debut Coming on Strong (2004) to the eccentric One Life Stand (2010), the new millennial London outfit crafts pop-leaned arrangements informed by disco, R&B, house, and anything in between. For this DJ set expect Prince shout-outs (“Down With Prince”), ballroom hip-shakers (“Shake a Fist”), and vulnerable electro-pop musings (“Take It In”).
