    Café Tacvba, Flor de Toloache

One of Mexico’s premier alternative rock bands, Cafe Tacvba only employs rock as a foundational blueprint to then add flourishes of folk, ska, and hip-hop as means of experimentation while still retaining their roots of Norteño, bolero, and ranchera. Expansive Re (1994), lush electronica on Reves/Yo Soy (1999), post-punk nostalgia in Cuatro Caminos (2003), and this year’s typically synth-rock simmer Jei Beibi span a cross-section of genres in boundless reinvention. Twenty-five celebrated years includes multiple Latin Grammys and a Grammy.

The Warlocks, Psychic Ills, The Well, Troller, Lake of Fire, Al Lover

L.A.’s Warlocks found acclaim teetering between psychedelia and garage punk. Drone-sodden circumspection characterizes 2016’s Songs From the Pale Eclipse, but their calling card remains slurred vocal pathos from sole constant Bobby Hecksher. Onetime Austinites Tres Warren and Elizabeth Hart comprise NYC’s Psychic Ills. Their twang-tinged psych-folk summons the foggy nexus of reality and imagination. This two-stage Levitation showcase also features locals the Well, Troller, Studded Left, Lake of Fire, DJ Al Lover, and visuals from Ether Wave and Acid Light Show.

    Balmorhea, Will Johnson

Balmorhea’s gorgeously atmospheric compositions left off with 2012’s Stranger, but the local sextet led by RG Lowe and Michael Muller returns this month with sixth studio LP Clear Language. A rush of strings, piano, and percussion climaxes with lush, intoxicating rhythms, dramatic and intimate in the same breath. Will Johnson leads the two-night release run Thursday behind stellar 2017 solo LP Hatteras Night, a Good Luck Charm. Caroline Says opens Friday.
