    Black Pumas

Following a seven-performance outing during SXSW, Black Pumas return to its regularly scheduled residency on South Congress. The psych-soul Austin sextet just teased a debut LP with “Black Moon Rising.” Eric Burton shines on the cut with the voice of a budding R&B star, but you have to bear witness live to see his James Brown dance moves.

    Dorothy, Those Damn Eyes

Signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, this Los Angeles blues-rock outfit fronted by Dorothy Martin debunks the title of its 2016 debut Rockisdead with thunderous riffs, rocksteady drum punches, and the frontwoman’s raspy vox. March 16 follow-up 28 Days in the Valley rides that theme behind a more vulnerable exterior, single “Flawless” trading in some of the grit for softer country.

    Martha Kelly

Austin's own, as they say, and cracking up audiences with the comedic art of self-deprecation taken to its observational pinnacle and dropped over the edge to mewl piteously as it falls. Good stuff, not to mention that Kelly's sets are also the perfect antidote to the most gung-ho rah-rah synergy-leveraging parts of SXSW.
