  • Laundry & Bourbon with Lonestar

Laundry and Bourbon with Lonestar, two companion one act plays set in backyards of a small Texas town. Three ladies come together to talk about their life's ups and downs. Lonestar follows the life of three small town boys and the events that have shaped them. Both shows give us highs & lows with humor spread around, for good measure.

    East Austin Studio Tour

No, no, citizen, there is no way you haven't at least heard of this thing. After all these years, after all its Austin-positive consequences, unless you just moved here from, like, Turnip Patch, Idaho, you know that 1) this is the single biggest visual-arts event in the city, 2) it's been going on annually for more than a decade, 3) those relentless movers-and-shakers of Big Medium are the main engine powering its glory, 4) it takes place over two weekends, 5) you get to invade, as it were, the home studios of dozens and dozens of artists on the sunrise side of the ATX, 6) you can mingle in all those amazing Eastside galleries, too, where there will be special shows and sales and demos and parties going on, and 7) we have some recos for you – right here, in fact – so you might avail yourself of a little graphic brilliance beyond the wealth of wonders everyone always enjoys at Canopy and Flatbed and Pump Project during this thing. Get it? Got it? Good.

    Rude Fusion: Bear Eats Bear

Rude Mechs and groundswell theatre company present Lydia Blaisdell's retro-future audio adventure that invites theatre fans, audiophiles, and hikers to join the Rebellion and discover the fabled Archive of the Before Time in a feral, apocalyptic American wilderness. Directed by Katie Van Winkle, with performances by Martinique Duchene-Phillips, Katie Dahm, and Megan Tabaque, and featuring a panoply of local voice talents on cassette tape. It's "a hike, a collage, a satire, a desperate plea, and a memorial for the world’s transient and fierce beauty," says the director. And right here is what our reviewer says.
    Through Nov. 12. Sat.-Sun., 3 & 5pm. $10-25.

Sound on Sound presents Boris, Endon, USA/Mexico

As many years active as studio releases, Boris’ 25th anniversary U.S. tour doubles as promotion for July’s Sargent House bow, Dear. A mix of stoner rock and trad doom, it departs from fuzz rock fan favorites Heavy Rocks and Pink, but still finds the Japanese trio toying with drone and heavy metal. Recent collaborator Endon brings the black metal, and Butthole Surfers noise-punk offshoot USA/Mexico rounds out a perfectly weird lineup.

Sound on Sound presents Hot Chip (DJ set), Tim Sweeney, Lovefingers, Flying Turns

Get “Ready for the Floor.” From goofy, mellow debut Coming on Strong (2004) to the eccentric One Life Stand (2010), the new millennial London outfit crafts pop-leaned arrangements informed by disco, R&B, house, and anything in between. For this DJ set expect Prince shout-outs (“Down With Prince”), ballroom hip-shakers (“Shake a Fist”), and vulnerable electro-pop musings (“Take It In”).

Sound on Sound presents Snow tha Product, Castro Escobar, AJ Hernz

This triple threat Latina bill headlines Snow tha Product, whose Claudia Meza bodybags competition on “Bad Bitches,” bounces clubs in the pop-leaned “Nuestra Cancion Pt. 2,” and boasts sing-song cadences in “Waste of Time” from spitfire mixtape The Rest Comes Later. Meanwhile, Castro Escobar drops introspective bars in debut Fidel’s Lunch like “crossing the river in ’95, a few days after Selena died” and San Antonio native AJ Hernz offers woozy pop-R&B atmospherics.

Sound on Sound presents the Shins, Baio

Sixteen years after the jangling “New Slang” became inescapable and Oh, Inverted World catapulted the Shins to indie juggernaut status, founder James Mercer maintains a genius pop sensibility and choirboy as permanent, recognizable anchors. His fifth release under the moniker from earlier this year, Heartworms, evokes that same quiet effervescence of the Shins’ prior work. It’s a buoyant pop sound, thriving on a clean, sleepy summer warmth.
