Austin Film Society: Films That Were Banned: Ivan the Terrible: Parts I and II

Not rated, 187 min. Directed by Sergei Eisenstein. Starring Nikolai Cherkasov, Lyudmila Tselikovskaya, Serafima Birman and Mikhail Nazvanov.

Ivan IV, who ruled Russia during the 16th century, is the subject of film trailblazer Sergei Eisenstein's epic biopic. Part I was released in 1944, but the release of Part II was delayed until 1958 because the increasingly harsh portrait failed to meet with Joseph Stalin's approval. The film uses shadows, symbolism, and a late burst of color in creative ways, and the film's score is by Sergei Prokofiev.
