Austin Film Society: Films That Were Banned: Salt of the Earth

Not rated, 94 min. Directed by Herbert Biberman. Starring Juan Chacon, Rosaura Revueltas and Will Geer.

Made by a group of blacklisted filmmakers and nonprofessional actors during the McCarthy era, Salt of the Earth remains a landmark film about labor unions. Based on a strike by New Mexico zinc miners, the film also shows how the battle was waged with the help of the miners' spouses and some sexual role reversals.
