REVIEWED By Marjorie Baumgarten, Wed., March 21, 2001

Anyone who's seen "Bedhead" or any of Robert Rodriguez's other early short films made in San Antonio with the acting help of his large squadron of brothers and sisters knows that this director who established his reputation with blazing action show-stoppers is soft touch when it comes to directing kids. We expect great things from this comic adventure movie that looks like it might provide equal fun for young and old alike. Kids might also have a good time at the movie's Web site: www.spykids.com/index_ie.html. To celebrate the Austin premiere at the Paramount Theatre, a street carnival will be held from 2-5pm outside the theatre. The carnival is a benefit for Ronald McDonald's House and the Austin Film Society and features free rides, snacks, and characters from the movie. A $25 ticket provides admittance to the carnival and the 5pm screening of Spy Kids followed by a Q&A with Rodriguez and a drawing for a part as an extra in Spy Kids 2. A special VIP pakage is available that also includes a March 31 tour of the Spy Kids sets. Call the AFS at 322-0145 for info on the VIP tix. For the tickets to the carnival and 5pm screening call Star Tickets at 469-SHOW.
