Suburban Commando

Don't be fooled by the presence of Duvall and Lloyd; let the kids go see this one without you. Hogan has shown an impressive ability to walk the thin line between camp and cretinism but he doesn't have the acting ability to carry it off in a sustained fashion on the movie screen. Nor did this film's creators have anything resembling a coherent idea for the film. “Hey,” says one, “let's make Hulk Hogan an alien.” “Fine,” says another one, “guess that means we have to hire Christopher Lloyd.” “Oh, and while you're at it, we've kidnapped members of Shelley Duvall's immediate family, so she'll play Lloyd's wife.” “Let's have lunch.” So they cast Lloyd as a mild-mannered architect afraid to stand up to anyone until Hogan comes to town. Hogan stomps and grunts and throws furniture around. Basically he's a nice guy with very little patience or tact, until Lloyd falls in love and becomes brave when his friend is threatened by evil aliens. Larry Miller is good, he plays Lloyd's worthless, smiling, conniving boss. Another plus, Jack Elam is in this movie. Really, to judge by the cast, someone must have thought this was going to be better than it was, but it's not.
