  • Romeo y Juliet

A bilingual adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s most cherished works, Romeo y Juliet recounts the tale of two star-crossed lovers, daughters from the feuding houses of Capulet and Montague, reimagined in Alta, California in the 1840’s prior to the annexation of California to the United States.

  • Gabriele Galimberti - The Ameriguns & Toy Stories: Artist Talk & Reception

Internationally acclaimed Gabriele Galimberti’s first US exhibition of “Ameriguns” & “Toy Stories” comes to Austin! The people in these images are from all walks of life, with no particular political party, race, culture, or gender in favor. Ameriguns and Toy Stories deliver striking images exploring the timely issues of gun culture and the impact of modern inequalities on children.

American Blood Song: A Puppet Operetta of the Donner Party

Oh, holy shit. That unstoppable Trouble Puppet crew, led by Connor Hopkins, often as sick and twisted as they are brilliant – and, yeah, they've been mind-bogglingly good at times – returns with a true-historical tale of the sort of privilege, entitlement, and hubris that leads to nation-building … and sometimes cannibalism. This spectacle is performed by Zac Crofford, Caroline Reck, Marina DeYoe-Pedraza, Indigo Rael, Jay Young, Zac Carr, and Melissa Vogt. It's a musical, too, with an original score by Mother Falcon. Recommended, but note: This is not the sort of puppet show you wanna take your smaller kids to – unless you've been feeding them long pig all this time.
    Through Aug. 17. Thu.-Sun., 8pm. $15-35.

    Carina Magyar

Runner-up in the 2017 Funniest Person in Austin contest? Check. Performed at the Moontower Comedy Festival, roast-battled at SXSW, riffed movies with Doug Benson, featured in the Amazon Prime documentary Funniest? Why, yes. She's also the showrunner for Austin's longest-running standup showcase, Live at Coldtowne. But … is she funny? Dude. Grrl. Citizen. Magyar is fucking hilarious, and Clara Blackstone opens for her here this weekend.
    Fri., Aug. 9. $10.

    The Seam Project: South

The Seam Project presents four multidisciplinary performances in four months, with each gathering a showcase of four to eight neighborhood artists and their collaborators on a 4' x 4' stage in the yard of a house. Maybe you've been looking for something a little off the beaten path of creative happenings in this town, something that's deep and sincere and will stick in your memory like a welcome wound of joy and connection? This first show features performances by Jai Almendarez, Jahna Bobolia, Mariah Keyrouz, Amy Myers & John Carr Gable, and Zach Muhn, and we're recommending it for anyone who's still (at least partially) alive.
    Fri.-Sat., Aug. 9-10, 8pm. Donations accepted.

    Writers of Saturday Night Live

That's right, two of them, scripting the hell outta your SNL week after week, now bringing their chops to Cap City. And while we can't vouch for Steven Castillo, we know that Andrew Dismukes is one of the funniest people to ever work a stage in this city. Reckon this gig is a sure bet for comedy excellence: You probably don't get their best stuff on that little screen, right?
    Aug. 7-10. Wed.-Thu., 8pm; Fri.-Sat., 7:30 & 10pm. $12-23.
