  • Beatles Full Moon Concert in the Dark

    On the April Full Moon, come set intentions and indulge in the mesmerizing allure of live acoustic music performed by world-class musicians, surrounded by the warm glow of candlelight. Its a different kind of concert, that begins and ends in darkness, with music and a poem or two surrounding and soothing you. Audience members will be given the choice of bringing their own yoga mats and/or pillows to gaze at the shadows on the ceiling. A circle of chairs will be provided.

    Kathy Dunn Hamrick: In Situ

    After two years of having them perform on water and in the middle of a big field, what has acclaimed choreographer Kathy Dunn Hamrick conjured for her troupe back at Cafe Dance? What sort of kinetic visions will be visited upon those attending? "I’m into movement invention," says Hamrick, "which means I go into the studio and investigate new ways of moving. If you want, look closely for detailed, complex, sometimes hidden movements and a high contrast between dynamics – like super-fast and super-slow. You might also notice that I break things up and then re-group." Modern dance, then, as this innovative company rocks it. And it's, um, what's it like? Says the maestra: "It’s up to you to decide if my work is funny, poignant, moving, odd, eerie, disturbing, beautiful or all of the above."

      Graham Reynolds Ruins the Holidays

      He does! The longhaired maestro of local legend totally takes your favorite holiday classics and drops them into a minor key, maybe mashes them up with something catchy yet now dissonant, just generally runs musically rough-shod all over the treacled tinsel of a Western childhood. And, oh! It's glorious! This year, Reynolds adds to the madness with a full string quartet, a three-piece trombone section, and pedal steel. Bonus: One of the seasonal standards is mashed up with a DMX song.

      "When Kemi, a 12-year-old first-generation Nigerian girl, moves from Washington, D.C. to Montgomery County, Maryland, her efforts to fit in at her new school are halted by her father's taxicab and the COVID-19 pandemic." Farah Lawal Harris' new play is presented by UT's Department of Theatre & Dance, as an interactive radio play with direction by Yunina Barbour-Payne.

      Austin Gay Men's Chorus

      The Austin Gay Men’s Chorus kicks off the holiday season by returning to the stage with an array of musical styles, ranging from Broadway to Gospel, to fill St. Martin’s with holiday spirit. Artistic director Daniel Arredondo promises a few surprises, including some of the chorus’s popular video productions.

      Lera Lynn, David Ramirez

      The most extraordinary aspect of Lera Lynn’s fifth album emerges in its lush and expansive indie-tinted sound, surprising given that the Nashville-based songwriter produced and played every instrument on the recording herself. Aptly titled On My Own, it still anchors on Lynn’s intoxicatingly dark and sultry vocals, like Cat Power alternating between aching vulnerability and devastating defiance. Opener David Ramirez adds his own tumultuous emotional climate, stirring through 2020’s love and heartbreak cycle My Love Is a Hurricane and this year’s spiritually rent Backslider EP.

      Opening: Koko's Bavarian

      It's a new German-style brewery! It's a new authentic-dining biergarten! One of its co-owners is Konstantin Prinz von Bayern, who is the legit Prince of Bavaria, and his great-grands literally started Oktoberfest! OK, you've been hearing the buzz for a while, and now it's time to check the place out – and nosh on German sausages (bratwurst, currywurst, duck-guanciale-blackberry, rabbit-rattlesnake, antelope), Belgian fries with five dipping sauces, traditional Bavarian specialties like schnitzel and smoked pork shoulder, rotisserie chicken, and pretzels big enough to make you go, like, "Ach du lieber!" There are also 30 German and local beers on tap (including the in-house brews: four lagers and two ales: pils, swarzbier, hefeweisen, marzen, dunkleweisen, and helles bock). And so on, in that tasty, krautly manner, all in the newly revamped location where the Brewer's Table used to be. Wilkommen, liebschen – and do tip your stylish mütze to brewmaster Katie Lowe.
