      Big Medium: Austin Studio Tour

The Austin Studio Tour, presented by those artful movers and shakers of Big Medium, is a combination of the pre-pandemic West Austin Studio Tour and East Austin Studio Tour, formerly separate and now joined into one citywide event that unfolds like divine origami across three local weekends in November. It’s a free, self-guided celebration of visual art that features more than 530 Austin-based artists and creative collaboratives, with the tour boundaries expanded to include all 10 city council districts for in-person participants, plus a 15-mile radius from the Capitol for virtual participants. The first weekend (Sat.-Sun., Nov. 6-7, noon-6pm) highlights the West side of Austin; the second weekend (Sat.-Sun., Nov. 13-14, noon-6pm) covers the West and the East; and the final weekend (Sat.-Sun., Nov. 20-21, non-6pm) wraps up with just the East. (You can pick up a free studio tour map at any Austin Public Library Branch, starting Nov. 4; but you’ve got to become a member of Big Medium to snag a copy of the Austin Studio Tour Art Book.) Here are five recommendations to jumpstart your explorations.

Every Time I Die, '68, Candy [garage]

Spawned from the frigid hellscape of Buffalo to combat the falsehood that listening to metal for lyrics is rock music’s “reading Playboy for articles,” Every Time I Die have spent two decades positioning their livewire riffs to explode upon instant contact with rampaging singer Keith Buckley – mathcore’s poet Laureate of alcoholic self-loathing. Thankfully, whether the dude’s copping a stoner-rock croon or howling about turning 42 (the November 19th date shall be... a birthday... bonanza), Buckley maintains remarkable intelligibility without sacrificing a thimble of frenetic energy. 2021’s Radical, a Trump-damaged masterpiece of an LP9, foregrounds the singer’s most gleefully self-destructive, despairingly nihilistic words to date – imbuing each pit-ready breakdown with palpable catharsis and urgency. Don’t wear your earbuds too tight. ‘68 and Candy open both nights.

      Group Therapy at Hotel ZaZa

Looking for a Thanksgiving meal as memorable as it is delicious? Reserve yourself a feast at the smart and snazzy Hotel ZaZa right in the heart of Downtown Austin, where the talented kitchen of Group Therapy will treat you very well indeed, fête-ing: you with the likes of a surf-n-turf crostini duo, sweet corn and poblano soup, and a Texas apple salad before you even get to the mains. And those mains? Orange Butter Scallop, with cauliflower pilaf and chili-rubbed baby carrots, is just one of the choices. (They also have the classic turkey option, natch.) You can à la carte everything here, of course, but we are so tempted by that order-the-whole-menu deal.
