Postscripts

A reception will be held for Luz Marina Delgado to commemorate the publication of her Manos de Mujer at Ruta Maya Coffee Company on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 7pm. The Guatemalan writer has traveled to Austin to help the La Ruta Maya Conservation Foundation raise the $40,000 needed to print and distribute 10,000 copies of her instructional book to classes and seminars throughout her war-torn homeland. The book is an informational tool intended to help the Mayan people educate themselves on social, economic, medical, and agricultural issues.

* THU, FEB 20: The Third Annual Carl and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation Lecture will feature David S. Zeidberg of the UT's Huntington Library speaking on "Selling Italy's First Books: Marketing Strategies in the 15th Century." It's at 7:30pm in the Fourth floor auditorium of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at UT.

* FRI, FEB 21: The Center for Mexican-American Studies at UT will hold an all-day symposium to honor Rolando Hinojosa-Smith. (See story on opposite page.)

* SAT, FEB 22: Borders will host Dr. Ron Klinger and photo essayist Bill Hanson as they discuss the essential contributions of fathers to their children at 6pm. The presentation will include images from Hanson's upcoming book, A Shoulder to Lean On. Austin family therapist Klinger has written The Common Sense, No Frills, Plain English Guide to Being a Successful Dad...

Caroline Campbell Robertson and Patty Page will autograph copies of The Austin Handbook at Barnes & Noble, 2-4 pm. The two sisters compiled info for the book when they owned and operated the Hill Country Welcome Service...

Blue Plate Press will feature Austin poets from This Year's Special, an anthology of 23 local poets, at Asylum Books, 2906 San Gabriel, at 7pm.

* WED, FEB 26: Austin Writers for the Environment will meet at the Howson Branch Library, 2500 Exposition, to hear a talk by Peter Altman of Sustainable Energy and Economic Development, 6:45-8:45pm. Call 459-7851.

* THU, FEB 27: Diego Vazquez, Jr. will read from his debut novel, Growing Through the Ugly, at Barnes & Noble, 7-8pm. Growing Through the Ugly is set in El Paso, the story of a child-turned-soldier who grew up along the Texas-Mexico border...

Poet Maxine Kumin will give a reading at 7:30pm in the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center's fourth floor auditorium on the UT campus. Kumin's most recent book is Connecting the Dots; her Up Country received the 1973 Pulitzer Prize. The event is sponsored by UT's Texas Center for Writers.
