Best of Austin 1997 Cover

Introduction

Welcome! This is our town, Austin, Texas. Pull up a chair and sit down. We'd like to show you a few things about this city we love. This, our eighth "Best of Austin," is our way of opening our pages to readers' comments and opinions about the things that make Austin great. And of course, we can't keep quiet about this, so we add our own enthusiastic picks for our favorite things, too. Can we mention everybody and everything deserving? No way. But every year we do try to explore new places, meet new people, and revisit familiar faves.

This year, a few writers proposed BOAs for our coverboy, access TV star Werner Zotter. The idea developed into what we hope will be a new tradition: to present a person, place, or thing to represent the very best of Austin's unique, elusive spirit. We hope you like this new twist.

Many folks contributed to the behind-the-scenes production of this issue. Special acknowledgement should be given to our intern and tabulating crew: Ghislaine Ball, Sarah Hepola, Nicole Kleman, to previous interns Marty Beard, Kevin Fullerton, David Snyder, Erin Kelly, Laura Weron-Williams, and to new recruits Allison Lince-Bentley and Lisa Tozzi. Thanks, also, to Marketing Director Tommi Ferguson and her assistants, Will Bettis, Daintry Carthel, Sarah Dozier, Mindi Holzschuh, and Bryan Wymore.
