SXSW Comedy 2014 Picks

By Russ Espinoza, March 7, 2014, Arts

If you do the math on the seventh edition of SXSW Comedy – full schedule at – you'll count 33 official events, three official parties, and 60-plus performers squeezed into its eight days, March 8-15.

But unlike the My Little Ponies or Micro Machines of our youth, you cannot possibly collect them all. So here are some hot leads from one comedy dork to another.

Inside 'Late Night With Seth Meyers' Former SNL head writer and new steward of NBC's post-Tonight Show slot Meyers joins producer Mike Shoemaker and head writer Alex Baze for an illuminating discussion of version 3.0 of the Late Night franchise. Saturday, March 8, 3:30-4:30pm, Austin Convention Center, Rm. 18ABCD

'Comedy Bang! Bang!' Host Scott Aukerman may look like a youth sobriety counselor, but CBB! – a SXSW Comedy fixture that sprouted from a weekly podcast into an IFC original cable series – is a 10-gallon hat of idiosyncratic ingenuity. Join "Hot Saucerman" and comedian James Adomian for a live podcast taping. Sunday, March 9, 4-5:30pm, Esther's Follies, 525 E. Sixth

An Evening With Bill Cosby No room in the world can cage the enormity of Bill Cosby's timeless celebrity, which is why this staggeringly intimate engagement at Lustre Pearl jumps off the page as SXSW Comedy's big splash. Monday, March 10, 8-8:30pm, Lustre Pearl, 97 Rainey

'Portlandia': Behind the Scenes With the Creators Put a bird on your calendar for a little panel of Portland – our hipster-saturated brethren to the northwest – with series co-creators/stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein. Tuesday, March 11, 3:30-4:30pm, Austin Convention Center, Rm. 18ABCD

'The Chris Gethard Show' Not since a little labor of love called Wayne's World has a public access show mattered. Branded "the most bizarre and often saddest talk show in New York City," comedian/writer/host Chris Gethard holds court with a clique of lovable, zany misfits. Wednesday, March 12, 6-7:30pm, Esther's Follies, 525 E. Sixth
