Decade on the Vanguard

No. 10 looks like the best Salvage Vanguard birthday ever!

Kid Carnivore
Kid Carnivore

Seems like only yesterday that a few drama school grads from Brown showed up in town, proclaimed themselves a theatre company, and aimed to prove it by staging some original rock musical thing called Kid Carnivore in the Electric Lounge. They had this audacious idea that you could get people under the age of 30 to go to theatre by treating plays like music: making 'em short and punchy, and performing 'em in clubs.

Turns out they were on to something. Their kind of original, visceral, immediate theatre touched a nerve with that twentysomething audience (and some folks on the far side of 30, too), and Salvage Vanguard Theater became a company to watch.

Believe it or not, it's been 10 years since that auspicious debut, and while the Electric Lounge is no more, co-founder and former resident playwright David Bucci has moved on, and everyone involved has long since crossed the age threshold into undeniable adulthood, SVT is still going strong, with Jason Neulander, poster boy for Austin's "rebel theatre" scene (, still at the helm of the company he co-founded. Neulander is as proud as a papa over SVT reaching the one-decade mark, so proud that he's stuffed the next two weeks with celebratory events, from play readings to a "hoot nite" to a 24-hour road trip to Louisville to see resident company member Dan Dietz's 10-minute play performed at the Humana Festival. And just to show you how much Salvage Vanguard has grown up in a decade, its anniversary party will be held at the home of the mayor! Quite a move for the kids who took pride in the slogan "I hate theatre" (a slogan which, please note, will be officially retired at the party). For the lowdown on the 10th anniversary events, see below. For more information, call 474-SVT-6 or visit .
