Another Old Master

What could be better than having the wealth of Old Masters masterworks that is the Suida-Manning Collection? How about having the Suida-Manning Collection, plus one more Old Master painting? That's the enviable position the Blanton Museum of Art is in this week as it enhanced its already rich holdings of Renaissance and Baroque art – by itself, the Suida-Manning Collection consists of 240 paintings and nearly 400 drawings – with the acquisition of Luca Cambiaso's 16th-century work Virgin and Child With the Young St. John the Baptist. The purchase of this early oil painting by the Genoese artist, with an estimated value of at least $500,000, was made possible through the generosity of the Effie and Wofford Cain Foundation, which donated an undisclosed sum to the museum. The 36-inch-by-32-inch painting is currently on display at the European Fine Art Fair in Maastricht, Netherlands. When it arrives in Austin early next month, it will bring the number of Cambiasos owned by the Blanton to seven. Expect to see it on display locally by mid-April and in a place of honor in the new Blanton when that facility opens in 2005.

Gimme Some Skin

You gotta admire Cinqué Hicks. When the Web-savvy visual artist couldn't find one spot on the Internet where he could obtain news about progressive, contemporary black visual artists, he created that spot himself. He's christened it Electric Skin, and it pulls news about black visual arts, including film and digital art, from sites in this country, Canada, Africa, and the UK. There's also room for additional news on artists of other cultures, technology, and artforms besides the visual arts. It figures that the man who created We Are All Global Nomads – the Web-based project that collected information about people from around the world, then streamed it into Republic Square Park, where it was projected onto seven 10-foot screens – would find another way to be a good global citizen.
