Spring Fashion Folio

A collection of Austin style makers and shakers

Austin is many things to many people – and to many of us, it's the center of the universe. Many publications have tried to define Austin style, and none successfully. Nor are we attempting to solve that riddle here, either. After all, Austin is Austin: a willful, independent life force all its own, bowing to no one, and never conforming to anyone else's idea of what Austin should be. It is a city about people and ideas, and what is fashion if not a bridge between those? By covering fashion, 'The Austin Chronicle' continues with its history of getting to the heart of the city and celebrating the adventurous creative activities and the many communities that are involved with them. In this premiere issue, we have grouped our shots into three categories: Interactive, Music, and Film.

Interactive: Austin has long been on the cutting edge of new ideas and media, firmly rooted in the past, while the city and its population let their minds drift into the future, imagining what could be, then making it real. This segment is shot by Bob Sherman, a daring photographer who knows no boundaries. In his segment, we offer locally designed high-end jewelry, clothing, accessories, and even shoes.

Music: With decades of having the spotlight on our music scene, Austin has turned out a deeply impressive range of music and musicians in a panoply of styles. We are pleased to have legendary Andrew Shapter agree to work with us, shooting this segment. Utilizing a variety of local retailers, Andrew presents an integral part of the music scene that he knows well – the fan.

Film: Another of Austin's crown jewels, the film industry, is a living, breathing part of society here. Fashion follows film, and film follows fashion – a synergy chronicled by a photographer as unique as Austin itself, Todd V. Wolfson. Employing a lighting technique inspired by the photography icon George Hurrell, Todd presents casual, romantic portraits incorporating a sense of history but never forgetting that we are in the 21st century.

In our debut Fashion Folio, 'The Austin Chronicle' is presenting a range of fashion from a multitude of independent Austin retailers and designers – each making a particular contribution to the phenomenon known as Austin style. We have an incredibly diverse design scene here in Austin, and we will continue to explore it in the future. On this, our maiden voyage into fashion land, we invite you to sit back and take in the scenery. – Stephen Moser, Fashion Editor
