Tapestry Moves!

By Robert Faires, July 4, 1997, Arts

The above comment may seem obvious given the subject -- sure, Tapestry moves; it's a dance company! -- but in this case, we're talking about the troupe's studio and offices. This week, Tapestry Dance Company leaves its North Austin home of seven years (at 2521 Rutland, near Burnet & 183) and moves to a warehouse in the heart of town. According to Tapestry co-director Acia Gray, the multi-form professional company felt stifled and removed from its base of support up north and wanted a headquarters where it could draw from students at UT and families in East Austin and the central city. It seems to have found such a space at 507-B Pressler, four blocks west of North Lamar. A grand opening bash is set for August 9, but the new studio and offices open officially this Monday, July 7. Call the new number, 4-Rhythm, for info.

Worthy Causes

Capitol City Playhouse may be gone, but part of it lives on in the "Far Above the Madding Crowd" Fourth of July bash begun by Cap City's late founder Michel Jaroschy. Every Independence Day for the past several years, Jaroschy hosted a fundraiser/soiree on the roof of the Tipps Building, 200 Colorado, to watch the fireworks on Town Lake. This year, Jaroschy is gone and so is his theatre, but the new tenants at 214 W. Fourth (Cap City's old site) will continue the tradition. Fadó Irish Pub, in conjunction with the Austin Circle of Theatres and Austin Scriptworks, will host a reception before the fireworks at the pub, 6-8:30pm, to be followed by a trip to the Tipps at 8:30pm, with refreshments on the roof. Tickets are $25 ($15 for the roof party only). All proceeds benefit ACoT, Austin Scriptworks, and the Jaroschy family. For more info, call 499-8388.
