All symposium events will be held in the Leeds Gallery, the fourth floor of the Flawn Academic Center, UT campus. Registration is $25 students/$75 others. Call 471-8944 for information.
In addition to the symposium proper, the local theatre scene is offering Austinites and visitors four opportunities to experience works from this landmark era in theatre.
* Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party -- Critical Mass has produced a revival of Pinter's masterful "comedy of menace" featuring an impressive cast of Austin actors under the direction of Barry Pineo (Hamlet). It runs through Nov 30, Thu-Sat, 8pm, at Hyde Park Theatre. 499-TIXS.
* David Hare's Racing Demon -- Hare's work is rarely produced in Austin, so it's apt that a group called Rare Creations is staging this drama's area premiere. The UT student company concludes its run with performances Thu & Sun, 8pm, in the Utopia Theatre on the UT campus. 708-8890.
* Tom Stoppard's Arcadia -- Different Stages offers a reading of this recent success by Stoppard, a look at history, truth, landscape, philosophy, and sex from the respective perspectives of the early 19th and late 20th centuries. The only reading will be Nov 10, Sun, 6pm, at The Acting Studio. 499-TIXS.
* Caryl Churchill's Vinegar Tom -- The UT Department of Theatre & Dance provides a kind of closing bookend to the symposium the week following the event. Laura Worthen directs this revival of Churchill's drama of witches and the persecution of women, which will run Nov 15-23, Tue-Sat, 8pm, Sun, 2pm. 471-1444. -- R.F.
