Another Eye on Cuba

February 16, 1996, Arts

Paul Margolis, whose photographs of Jews in Cuba are featured this month at Pro-Jex Gallery, has, in fact, visited Cuba. He shares Mercedes Wanguemert-Peña's fascination with the place, which, he says, has changed very little since she left as a child. The root of Margolis' obsession has to do with recording little-known aspects of Jewish life. A documentary photographer and writer from Englewood, New Jersey, he traveled to Cuba with a Miami-based humanitarian organization devoted to helping Cuba's Jews. His photographs are competent and straightforward. The stories behind them are much more complex and worthy of further exploration.

Jews in Cuba runs through Mar 8 at Pro-Jex Gallery.
