Soccer Watch

The Austin Aztex won another game on the road in Houston Saturday evening, taking a 2-1 decision on goals from 19-year-old Gambian phenom Bubacarr Jobe (his first) and Chuy Cortes (a 74th-minute winner), plus a rare goalkeeper assist from all-everything Devin Perales. The Aztex continue to have the best record in the 64-team PDL at seven wins and one draw, and they look to extend that unbeaten streak this Saturday against the Laredo Heat, who are fighting Midland/Odessa for the Mid South Division's second playoff spot. The Aztex have just three more home games left in the regular season: After this Saturday, they play three road games in a row, before finishing the season at home on Friday, July 11, and the following Thursday, July 17.
Elsewhere... just about the only other soccer action going on anywhere is the U.S. Open Cup, which had its round of 16 matches this week. Two second division (NASL) teams upset MLS opponents to reach the final eight, and the Rochester Rhinos of USL Pro (that's the league the Aztex will be in next year) are playing the New England Revolution as we go to press.
Otherwise, it's all about the World Cup. See this week's World Cup Watch for more, and austinchronicle.com/sports for World Cup Watch Daily.
