The UT Longhorns (8-3-1) got off to a great start in Big 12 play last weekend, beating TCU, 2-0, and Iowa State, 3-1. They face a tough road trip this weekend, though, playing at West Virginia Friday night, then heading to Lawrence, Kansas, for a 1pm Sunday match with the Kansas Jayhawks. And then (how time flies), there are just two home games left in the 2013 season: against Baylor at 7pm Fri., Oct. 11, and Oklahoma at 1pm, Sun., Oct. 20.

The St. Edward's men (4-1-1) jumped all the way from unranked to ninth in the nation after beating formerly fifth-ranked West Texas A&M last weekend, then trouncing McMurry on the road, 7-0. The women (5-0-2) won a pair as well, shutting out Dallas Baptist, 2-0, and St. Mary's, 5-0. The Hilltoppers host two doubleheaders this week: Oklahoma Christian on Saturday, and Dallas Baptist on Monday; men at noon, women at 2:30pm each day.

World Cup qualifying resumes next Friday, Oct. 10. Ten teams, including the U.S.A., have already punched their tickets for next summer in Brazil; another 11 will be decided next week, with the remainder coming from November playoffs... Oct. 10 is also the deadline to order WC tickets in the first phase of the sale (another round will come after the World Cup final draw, Dec. 6). See www.fifa.com for ordering info... The worst team in MLS, D.C. United (3-21-6), won the U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night, beating Real Salt Lake, 1-0, and claiming one of four U.S. spots in the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League... German clubs went 4-0 this week in the European Champions League group stage, highlighted by Bayern Munich's 3-1 romp at Manchester City.
