Aztex announce tryout schedule, and more
By Nick Barbaro, Fri., Nov. 30, 2012
The Austin Aztex have announced their 2013 tryout schedule, to be held at Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex (10211 W. Parmer in Round Rock): a Jan. 5-6 invitational camp for returning players, a March 9 collegiate trial, and an April 6 open/community trial, plus an indoor showcase March 23 at the SoccerPlex of Cedar Park. The tryout fee is $40; register online at www.austinaztex.com.
On TV this week: The MLS Cup title game, Houston Dynamo vs. LA Galaxy (Saturday, Dec. 1, 3:30pm, on ESPN) should be an intriguing rematch of last year's final; it'll also be David Beckham's last game for the Galaxy, and possibly Landon Donovan's as well. Beckham, 37, says he'll keep playing somewhere; Donovan, who just turned 30, says he may be done for good... On Tuesday-Wednesday, Dec. 4-5, are the final games of the European Champions League group stage (1:30pm, FSC); some of the drama is drained away, with 13 of the 16 spots in the knockout round already decided. The second-tier Europa League wraps up its group stage this week as well, even as European confederation president Michel Platini announced that the competition could be scrapped after next year, in favor of an expanded Champions League. Hard to see that plan making anybody happy, except perhaps the TV networks.
