Texas Rollergirls Championship
High-stakes bout to end the season
By Richard Whittaker, Fri., Sept. 7, 2012
Can there be a higher stakes bout? The once unstoppable Hotrod Honeys challenging the resurgent Hell Marys for the 2012 Texas Rollergirls championship. Last month the Honeys pulled off what may be the best bout – or at least the bravest – in Texas' history. Coming in under strength, they took two ejections, two injuries, and still beat the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers. It was an extraordinary battle, but they'll need lightning to strike the Convention Center twice. The Hells have dwelled in the pit for a long time, but this year they are a seamless machine: no flash, but a lot of function. If they can keep their discipline, then even the resurgent Honeys may find themselves wrecked on their Stygian shores. And there's one last chance for the Heartbreakers as they fight for bronze with the Hustlers. It's a battle that will see many retiring veterans – including some true legends of flat-track Roller Derby - in a farewell for the ages. Sat., Sept. 8, 6pm (doors, 5:15pm). Austin Convention Center, 500 E. Cesar Chavez. $15, children 12 and under free.
