Fantastic Fest (Sept. 18-25)

A decade under the influence: Once described as the geek Telluride, the Alamo's celebration of everything weird, horrifying, phantasmagorical, and innovative leads the field in oddball cinema. As much family reunion as festival, it returns to South Lamar for its 10th anniversary.

MondoCon (Sept. 20-21)

Fantastic Fest's twin of evil celebrates the print mavericks of Mondo, through panels and signings with their regular artists like Kevin Tong and Phantom City Creative, and legends of film-inspired graphic arts Famous Monsters' Basil Gogos and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.

Austin Polish Film Fest (Oct. 16-19)

This annual showcase of new and classic Polish films gets an early boost with September series Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema, a co-project with the Austin Film Society. The fest also boasts an always-nifty side exhibit devoted to Polish poster design.

Cinema Touching Disability Film Festival (Oct. 17-18)

Dispelling myths since 2004, this festival combats stereotypes by realistically and positively portraying life with disabilities.

Housecore Horror Film Festival (Oct. 23-26)

Down screamer/horror aficionado Phil Anselmo mixes morbid movies and metal music, featuring the official Texas Chain Saw Massacre 40th anniversary cast reunion, 35mm frighteners old and new, plus tape terror in the VHS Vomitorium (beanbags and sickbags provided).

Austin Film Festival & Conference (Oct. 23-30)

Movies don't just write themselves, you know. That's why AFF is all about celebrating screenwriters. The long-running fest tenders informative panels on craft, star-studded happy hours, and a film slate welcoming to no-budget indies and Oscar bait alike.

Forever Fest (Nov. 14-16)

Other Worlds Austin

(Dec. 4-6)

A brand-new celebration of science fiction: Founder and ex-AFF booker Bears Fonte explains, "There are a ton of sci-fi films out there, maybe they've played another festival, maybe they are a bit more indie. ... I want to create an outlet for those films."
