Sun Don't Shine

Emerging Visions
D: Amy Seimetz; with Kate Lyn Sheil, Kentucker Audley

An enigmatic Southern Gothic that wends its way over and around the back roads of Southern Florida, this haunting and mysterious film feels like a fever dream. Moody Crystal (Sheil) and boyfriend Leo (Audley) are close enough in tone to Badlands' Kit and Holly to be distant family, although what this pair is running from isn't evident to the viewer at first. When the truth in the trunk is revealed, the stakes are raised and questions of sanity, truth, and love envelop the couple like a dark, starless night. Sheil has a formidable screen presence, all pouts and wild mood swings. Audley is, in his own way, just as arresting, the cool head with the dangerous heart. High praise goes to cinematographer Jay Keitel, whose work here brings new meaning to the world "sultry."
