Cherry
Narrative Feature, Emerging VisionsD: Jeffrey Fine; with Kyle Gallner, Laura Allen, Britt Robertson, Esai Morales, Matt Walsh
Putting aside the question of whether the world really needs another movie about an American boy virgin, this is an awfully likable entry into the cherry-poppin' canon. Twitchy overachiever and budding artist Aaron (played with a perma-cringe by Veronica Mars' Gallner) spends his first semester at university distracted by the competing interests of his comely thirtysomething classmate (Allen) and her equally lovely 15-year-old daughter (Robertson). Despite some tonal inconsistencies and ill-fitting stabs at whimsy, all-around good performances, Fine's snappy script, and Michael Hoskins' original illustrations elevate Cherry into a sensitively felt and fundamentally sweet coming-of-age pic.
