Short Cuts

Absolutely Nothing Like Kung Pow At All, We Promise, Dept.: Although the current Alamo Drafthouse Cinema's calendar mentions their upcoming Kung Fu Masterpiece Theater in the same sentence with Steve Oedekerk's mind-suckingly godawful Kung Pow: Enter the Fist, Alamo co-owner Karrie League has sworn on a stack of dry, tasteless fortune cookies that the theatre's similarly conceived redubbing of the 1973 chopsocky epic Fearless Fighters will be far less likely to have patrons jamming knitting needles in their eyes than Oedekerk's recent travesty. Here's the deal: The Alamo, in association with Buzz Moran (of Salvage Vanguard's live-radio production of The Intergalactic Nemesis) and Golden Arm Trio's Graham Reynolds, has unearthed a print of the obscure Shaw Brothers production, deleted the soundtrack, and will be screening it with a new, live soundtrack (including foley effects, natch), accompanied by a Reynolds score. "Ours is not going to suck," promise the Leagues, and anyone who's caught one of Reynolds' scores for the theatre's ongoing silent cinema series knows how terrific live accompaniment can be. All this and a guy named Buzz! Tix and info for this "100% Suckless" film event -- which happens this Sunday, Feb. 24 -- are available online at www.drafthouse.com... The Association of Independent Film and Videomakers Austin salon is back in action this Sunday, Feb. 24, 7pm, at the Hideout (617 Congress) after a brief hiatus while El Jefe Anne Del Castillo dealt with co-producing the Six in Austin anthology flick. 6iA director Geoff "Comedy Is My Bitch and Bitchness Is Good" Marslett will be the featured speaker, screening clips from work-in-progress Trip to Roswell, described as "an animated sci-fi musical comedy." The salon is free and open to the public. More info is available by calling 507-8105.
